National Science Week at Birkdale
20 March 2007

Many exciting science related activities were arranged throughout the week for both the Senior and Prep school. A large number of lectures took place on diverse scientific issues, with topics ranging from “Out and about in the Universe”, “Who was Archimedes?” to “The Biggest Epidemic”. One lecture which really gripped pupils interest was the Polymer Science lecture, where they learnt how modern clothing in Japan today have cameras on the front and TV screens on the reverse, so that the TV screen show what the camera is facing, making the person apparently invisible!

Pupils were also engaged in experiments. Small -Piece Ltd from Leamington Spa, challenged pupils in Y9 to design and make electro-magnetic crane structures to pick up and deposit paper clips, ensuring that each moved successfully whilst Y8 were engaged in the complications of bridge building with the Royal Engineers.
The results were excellent and greatly enjoyed by each participant.
