Mike Stones (1939 - 2006) Sheffield Teacher remembered
24 January 2007
A memorial service was held recently for Michael Stones who died in Spain last summer. Mike was a long serving member (34 years) of Birkdale Prep school, in charge of PE and Games.
Mike was born and bred in Sheffield, who travelled the world with the Navy after leaving school. He left the Navy in 1966, took up teaching and eventually joined Birkdale Prep School in 1968.

He ensured that Birkdale Prep School became a well-known and successful name in junior sport playing locally against schools in and around the Sheffield area.
Among his many sporting talents, Michael was an accomplished skier and he led the annual Lower School ski trip to Austria from 1972 until his retirement in 2002, providing many boys with fond memories of winter holidays. He was also a keen cricketer playing for Dore Village cricket team.
Staff remember Mike for his high professional standards, his commitment to the school and contribution to many areas of school life.
He was a “warm and lovely man” who will be greatly missed.
