Birkdale return to Nepal
27 March 2007
Birkdale are hoping that the recently improved political stability in the country will ensure that the 18 pupils aged 14 to 18 years and three staff who fly out to Nepal this week, will have a problem free trip. Pupils will be assisting with the building of a new leprosy colony school in Kathmandu. Birkdale raised well over £1000 in a recent jumble sale to help purchase the building supplies now needed. The building is in its early stages of construction.
Fund raising has been continuous and many educational items will be taken out with the pupils to give directly to another school, the Peace Garden School in Kathmandu. This is the first school to be built with money raised by pupils at Birkdale and now has over 300 pupils. The Nepalese children are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Sheffield based students knowing that the group will spend a week teaching them. This follows a trek in the Himalayas and a flight to the popular Chitwan jungle safari area to the south of the country.
The pictures show a banner carried to just below the summit of Mt Everest recently by a mountain guide called Pasang. He is one of the main Sherpa guides for Birkdale every time they visit the country.
