From Birkdale to Chinatown
10 March 2008

A Chinese meal and a lesson in using chopsticks!

A group of Senior School pupils continued their interest in all things Chinese when they visited London recently. The trip was a full day of Chinese cultural activities and follows the successful Mandarin Chinese language course which has been run in conjunction with the Confucious Institute.

First, the group experienced the sights and sounds of Chinatown, followed by a Chinese meal and a lesson in using chopsticks!

The group then went on to the School of Oriental and African Studies, which offers an unparalleled range of 40 non European languages. The pupils enjoyed a short talk and toured the impressive library.

The highlight of the day was, without doubt the opportunity to see The First Emperor exhibition, particularly seeing the life-size terracotta figures at close range.

A memorable, cultural experience which may inspire pupils to consider further study of the language and culture of China.
