A group of 18 students, parents and staff from Birkdale School in Broomhill, Sheffield have recently returned from Kathmandu in Nepal where a new second school funded by the pupils was officially opened by Headmaster Robert Court.

This new school, called the Flower Field English School, has been built in a leprosy colony where children of those with this disease are shunned by others and so are deprived of an education. Currently there are 30 young pupils in the school and it is hoped that the number will grow significantly.

“The trip was amazing and it was like walking into a geography text book”, said one of the pupils on her return!

Certainly everyone involved benefited hugely from the visit. The pupils in Kathmandu appreciated the teaching they received from the Birkdale visitors and the Sheffield party experienced for themselves the high value placed on education as well as the completely different culture and economy; a contrast which is unlikely to be forgotten.
