Kuksay Lecture
16 January 2008

In the week that Sir Edmund Hillary died, Birkdale teacher John Allen presented the Kuksay Lecture detailing the ascent of four previously unclimbed peaks in China. This expedition took place during the summer of 2007.
Back in Sir Edmund Hillary’s day, the approach to Everest through China was not available because of the political situation. Even in 2007 it was an organisational challenge because special permission still has to be sought from the Chinese authorities in those parts of the Himalaya that fall within their borders.
The lecture took place at Birkdale School Wednesday 16 January.
