Go Girls!
16 August 2007
This year is the tenth anniversary of girls completing A levels within the co-educational Sixth Form at Birkdale School, Sheffield.

Georgina Smallman and Rachel Gibbs each achieved 5 A grades. Georgina who also achieved an A in Critical Thinking at AS level, is celebrating her success to secure her place at Lincoln College, Oxford to read Economics and Management, whilst Rachel, who joined Birkdale from Tapton School as a scholar, will read Electronic Engineering at Southampton. Ellen Osborne, whose elder sister was in one of Birkdale’s first cohort of girls, gained 3 A grades and grade B in AS Greek to read English and Classical Studies at Bristol.

Boys were equally also very successful. Sam Scully, who joined from Myers Grove as an Ogden Scholar, gained 4 grade A’s despite illness and he will now study Civil Engineering at Imperial College, London. Alistair Wardrope takes up his place at Wadham College, Oxford to read Physics and Philosophy whilst Ben Kirby will read Theology at St Stephen’s Hall, Oxford. Ahmad Barotchi has secured his place at Clare College, Cambridge to read Medicine.

19 pupils (nearly a quarter of the year group) gained A grades in each of their chosen A level subjects. With a 44% grade A pass rate overall and 75% of all the subjects taken gaining either grade A or B, going co-ed was clearly a smart move for Birkdale.
