Physics and French A level students visit Geneva
16 October 2007
Sixteen science and language pupils from Birkdale School, Sheffield, have recently made a successful and stimulating four day visit to Geneva. The aim was to sharpen their language and living and working abroad skills needed for university and beyond, as well as to better understand the many issues facing the new global community that we all live in.
A major highlight was a visit to the international scientific research facilities at CERN (a 20 nation multi-billion pound research effort to understand the fundamental building blocks of the universe) and experience first hand the huge scale and complexity of working at the forefront of modern science.
A visit to the headquarters of the United Nations to be shown how the UN responds to, and organizes disaster relief efforts as well as its role in peacekeeping around the world, and a visit to the Red Cross Museum to look at the global reach and problems facing many non-government organizations, further highlighted to the students the complexity of international relations.
