A Second School in Nepal is opened by students at Birkdale
18 March 2008

The group heading of to Nepal
A group of 18 students, parents and staff from Birkdale School in Broomhill, Sheffield depart today for Kathmandu in Nepal.
The pupils at Birkdale have been fund raising for the last nine years, raising over £76,000 to fund the cost of building and furbishing two schools both located in Kathmandu.
The first school is now over four years old and is thriving with over 220 pupils. To the delight of everyone some of the first graduates went on to study at Kathmandu University of Nepal, where three pupils gained the top three places in the first year exams which is a marvellous recommendation for the school.
The new second school will be officially opened by Birkdale Headmaster Robert Court, who is visiting Nepal especially for the ceremony.
This new school, called the Flower Field English School, has been built in a leprosy colony where children of those with this disease are shunned by others and so are deprived of an education. Currently there are 30 young pupils in the school and it is hoped that the number will grow significantly.
This work is extremely important to Birkdale and it provides the pupils with an experience they will never forget. The country is one of the poorest in the world and pupils return having learnt much about themselves and how people live with the most basic of facilities.
