Double Sporting Success!

The U11s have had a remarkable week on the sports field, first winning last Wednesday's Terrington Hall Sevens competition before defeating all of our usual rivals to win the HMC Football Tournament at Hymers College on Tuesday.

With the Sevens season now well underway, the U11 squad started it in the best possible way by bringing the trophy home from Terrington Hall. Despite a tough group stage, Birkdale played some fantastic sevens rugby to defeat Pocklington Prep, Cundall Manor and Durham Choristers fairly comfortably. This then put them through to the final group stage against the other group winners.

The closest contest of the day came when they fell behind early on to Aysgarth but a tremendous spirited display saw them come back to snatch victory, 21-14. Knowing that victory in their final match would guarantee the trophy, the boys blew away Terrington Hall 24-0 to begin the celebrations.

The Sevens season continues next week with trips to Trent College (9th March) and Pocklington (11th March).

Despite such a short Football season this year, the U11s still managed to claim a prestigious trophy at the annual HMC Tournament. Opening victories against Bronte House (1-0), GSAL (2-0) and Yarm (2-1), meant that even defeat against RGS Newcastle (0-2) in the final group game couldn't prevent them from reaching the semi-finals.

An absolute nail-biter against Bradford Grammar saw the game enter sudden death extra-time following a 3-3 draw. With a winner still failing to emerge, the contest went to penalties where Birkdale snatched victory. With Hymers defeating RGS in the other semi-final, the boys expected an incredibly tough final. Not so. They romped home 4-0 to win the trophy for the second time in four years and cap a fantastic week for U11 sport.

Many congratulations to both squads on fantastic victories!
