12 Chinese education delegates came from Shanghai to view the outstanding Design and Technology facilities at Birkdale School. They toured the department and observed the lessons during the morning of 10th March.
Birkdale School has an excellent reputation for its Design and Technology department and was selected by the Design and Technology Association (DATA) to demonstrate how D&T is taught in a secondary school. The delegates saw the full range of design and make activities undertaken by the S1 (Y7) and S2 (Y8) pupils at Birkdale. S1 boys Harry and Michael spoke articulately and confidently to the delegates about their current projects.
They also visited Systems and Control within the department and spoke at length with AS level students who revelled in explaining and demonstrating their "Mechatronic" projects.
DATA are working with and helping the Chinese set up D&T departments in some of China's secondary schools. Mr Andy Mitchell, Assistant Chief Executive of DATA said: "I came to you first as I have seen excellent D&T lessons taking place at Birkdale, which are of a very practical nature and make good use of modern technologies such as microelectronics."
