Election Candidates Speak at Birkdale

Birkdale School welcomed three of the Sheffield General Election candidates to speak to their senior students.

Many members of the Sixth Form will be voting on May 7 for the first time and it was seen as important that they should have a more informative approach as the day advances in order to be more engaged in the political debate.

Joe Otten, Lib Dem representing Central Sheffield Constituency, Ian Walker, Conservative and Oliver Coppard, Labour, both representing Hallam, Sheffield, all gave a speech addressing the key points from their manifesto which was of relevance to the younger voter. Our students then had an opportunity to listen and ask questions themselves on points of particular interest.

Many good questions emerged from the floor so that the Hustings made for a very different and stimulating start to the week!

Many of our pupils are already very interested in politics. Hannah Dungworth L6, took the initiative to speak to Nick Clegg when he was canvassing in Dore last Friday evening.
