Birkdale School golfers came second in the ISGA National School’s Finals. The two day tournament, which is the jewel in the crown of the Independent Schools' golfing calendar, was held at the prestigious course of Royal St George’s in Sandwich, Kent.
To qualify for the National Finals, schools must win one of seventeen regional areas. This section of the tournament was played as matchplay and Birkdale School comfortably won all 3 matches to progress. The format of the final altered to a strokeplay tournament with the best 2 out of the 3 golfers' scores to count.
On the first day of the contest Birkdale’s Tom Bradley and Barclay Brown both carded 76, five over par on the Prince’s Golf Course. This left Birkdale in 4th place, with the well-known and highly regarded golfing schools of Wellington, Whitgift and Loretto ahead.
On the next day the play switched to Royal St George’s championship course and Ted Towning, with the help of an inspired birdie birdie finish, shot an outstanding 71 – one over par. This, combined with another excellent round of 74 from Tom, put Birkdale joint second overall. The runners-up spot was then decided by the third score on the day and Barclay’s 75 gave Birkdale their highest ever finish in the tournament. To nicely round off a fantastic few days, all three golfers received gold medals for finishing in the top 15 individually.
Congratulations to Wellington for being victorious and thanks to the organisers at the ISGA for staging another excellent event.
