War of the Words!

A Sixth Form debating team of four represented Birkdale School in a regional French debating competition held at St. George's Academy, Sleaford on Friday 20 November.

They took part in two debates, both in French, one prepared and one unprepared. In addition, they attended workshops to improve their public speaking and presentation skills.

In the first round, the prepared debate, the Birkdale team was drawn against Stamford School, Lincolnshire and was opposing the motion that ‘Prisons are a waste of time and money.' Having only narrowly lost the first debate, the team was then drawn against St. George's Academy and for the second, unprepared debate, had to propose the motion that 'A vegetarian diet should be imposed on everyone.' Building on the tips given in the workshops, the team convincingly won this debate. Unfortunately, the team narrowly missed out on reaching the final and were placed third out of eight teams. Nevertheless, one of the pupils - Killian Dockrell - did receive an ‘Outstanding Speaker Award’ for his individual performances during the event.

All in all, it proved to be a memorable event, with a high standard of performance and the students enjoyed improving their French communication skills through the medium of debating.
