The team of Alex Davenport (Captain), Emmy Beeby, Maxwell Jones and Sophie Kitchin were crowned champions of the Yorkshire & Humber Region at the recent Target 2.0 Interest Rate Challenge Competition, held in Leeds.
This national competition pits the best Economics departments in the country against a panel of Bank of England judges and is also endorsed by The Times newspaper.
The team of outstanding young economists gave a polished performance in presenting their view on what interest rate and level of quantitative easing, along with ‘forward guidance’, should be set in order to meet the Government’s inflation target of 2.0%.
This very promising team beat off the challenge from 6 other strong teams from the region, including multiple national final winners Grammar School at Leeds, whom Birkdale have never beaten before.
The presentation was sophisticated and thorough, while the questions asked by the judges were typically subtle, stretching and theoretical. In the judges’ words “Birkdale won convincingly in all areas, and were especially strong in the Q&A section.”
The team now goes on to a national semi-final in February.
