The team of Alex Davenport (Captain), Emmy Beeby, Maxwell Jones and Sophie Kitchin were runners up in a national semi-final of the Target 2.0 Interest Rate Challenge Competition, held in Nottingham this week.
This national competition pits the best Economics departments in the country against a panel of Bank of England judges and is also endorsed by The Times newspaper.
The team of outstanding young economists gave a ‘slick, highly professional performance’ in the words of the judges, presenting their view on what interest rate and level of quantitative easing, along with ‘forward guidance’, should be set in order to meet the Government’s inflation target of 2.0%.
Having won the Yorkshire & Humber round in November, this outstanding team were only narrowly pipped in the semi-final, beating several national champion schools in the process. This placing equals the best ever performance by a Birkdale team.
