Birkdale School announce a new Chair of Governors from the middle of March this year. Paul Houghton, a Governor since 2013, has served as Chair of the Finance Committee and as part of the Strategy Group of the Governing Body. By profession he is chartered accountant and currently heads up the Sheffield office of Grant Thornton.
Mr Houghton said, “It is an honour to take over as Chair of this great school. Birkdale is a highly successful and friendly school, providing an outstanding education for children of all backgrounds within the context of a clear Christian ethos. Of paramount importance are the needs of the individual, and Birkdale’s staff work tirelessly to develop pupils’ abilities, character and confidence to provide the best foundation for a happy and fruitful life. With the other Governors I will be keen to maintain the current high standards, to continue with the development and improvements you would expect of a forward-looking school, and to hand Birkdale on to the next generation in even better shape. Collaboration will be key to this: collaboration between pupils, parents, staff, governors and the City of Sheffield, and I look forward very much to leading this over the years to come.”
Mr Houghton is also heavily involved in working for the benefit of Sheffield as a private sector board member of the City Region’s Local Enterprise Partnership, chairing the City Council’s Business Advisory Panel and as a board member of Sheffield Executive Board. However, he also supports entrepreneurship and sits on the board of Yorkshire Artspace and is currently working to establish The Maker Trust, a project to establish substantially more co-working space for digital creativity in Sheffield.
A practising Christian, Mr Houghton is treasurer of Christ Church Fulwood, and he also serves as a volunteer leader on Gloddaeth Holidays which runs fun-packed activity holidays for pupils from independent schools, giving them the chance to explore the Christian faith and its relevance for today.
