Ladies’ 1st XI v Staff Hockey Battle

The staff staged a dramatic fightback this year to hold the ladies’ 1st XI on Friday afternoon and partially erase the memory of last year’s whitewash. In the final game of a busy season, the staff overcame a two goal deficit to thwart the ladies’ ambitions of a third straight win in this prestigious fixture.

Mr Alsop (Maths dept.) and Mr Lidbury (English) were the heroes for the visitors, both scoring in the second half to secure a face-saving draw – Alsop latching on to a sublime lift pass from J.Tasker (recent signing from Abbeydale) and combining with Lidbury to score a fine goal, before Lidbury finished a flowing staff move involving Tasker, Allen (school chaplain) and Alsop with a precise strike into the bottom right corner.

Dr Greenhalgh put her body on the line to make some heroic and vital saves, whilst Mr King (Dir. Studies), Mr Offer (DT), Mr Cook (Physics), and Mr Clifford (Physics) battled hard in the middle of the pitch. Mrs Frost (Library), Dr Owen (Head Master), Mr Horner (Economics), Ms Shelton (Science), and Mr Brook (Biology) all fought hard for the staff team.

With the likes of Emmy Beeby, Rebecca Fowler, Verity Parker, Charlotte Kidd, Sophie Brotherston, and Elsa Robinson in their ranks, the ladies presented a formidable challenge, however the finely balanced game was enjoyed by all, with maximum effort and plenty of camaraderie.
