Matthew Jow (S5) recently attended an interview for the chance to secure a sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. These Scholarships support 16 to 18 year old students during the final two years of their school studies. The Scholarships are awarded to only the highest-potential students across the country who show promise to be future leaders in the Engineering Profession.
Matthew was selected from over 1400 applicants following a rigorous selection process comprising a detailed application form, a teacher’s reference and a two-hour engineering aptitude exam. Interview days for the Scholarship finalists were hosted at top universities including Cambridge and Imperial College. Matthew will find out in July if he has been recommended for the Scholarship. Only 400 Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are awarded annually and recipients have gone on to become CEOs of their own companies, industry Directors and leading academics.
During their sixth-form studies, Scholars receive £600 to support their endeavours to widen their knowledge of engineering and to fund their technical projects at school. Scholars are also provided with exciting and exclusive opportunities to learn more about engineering, such as mentoring and company visits. Schools receive £400 per Scholarship awarded to their students which helps to strengthen the teaching of maths, sciences and design/technologies at the school.
Mr Offer, Head of Design & Technology said, “The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are a tremendous accolade and the first step to achieving a position within the UK engineering profession. Matthew should be extremely proud of reaching the final stage of selection – I wish him well in his application.”
