China is the fastest growing major economy in the world with a population of 1.38 billion and one which, despite its slowing of economic activity, is continuing to increase its GDP apace. It was therefore a fantastic opportunity during the Easter holidays for 14 Birkdale students to gain a unique insight into the Chinese business world, ranging from visiting state-owned companies, such as the Sanyuan Foods Co. Ltd. in Beijing and bartering in the free markets, to JLL, Real Estate Agents and Mike & Kremmel in Hong Kong.
In addition, the group visited the Hong Kong Trade Development Council located close to the harbour where they were welcomed by Mr Frankie Tsang who explained China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative for trade development into the 21st century.
The group also had the opportunity to meet Doris Leung, award-winning social entrepreneur and CEO of Diamond Cab (HK) Ltd. This visit presented the group with another, very different, business model as it was set up principally to provide safe and comfortable transportation for wheelchair users whilst at the same time being financially viable.
Overall, it was a very successful trip, combining all of the above with some memorable cultural visits and we are sure that it will inspire some of the group to consider studying or indeed working in China and/or Hong Kong.
