Old Birkdalians, Charlotte Kidd (left 2016) and Ben Horscraft (left 2011) were at Buckingham Palace on 24 May to receive their Gold Award. They enjoyed a great day and all three of the expected royals were there – the Duke of Edinburgh himself, Prince Philip and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and Sophie. They were presented their Award by Prince Edward and the celebrity Chris Mears, an Olympic gold medallist diver.
Completing the Gold Award is a fantastic achievement as it not only involves completing a self-sufficient four-day, three-night expedition in a wild-country area but has four other sections to complete – a Skill, Physical Recreation, Volunteering and a Residential.
Birkdale School is a keen promoter of the D. of E. Award as it is a scheme in which young people are encouraged to push themselves and learn valuable life skills. All its Y9 pupils undertake Bronze training and expeditions and there are typically around fifty sixth-formers each year who enrol for the Award at Gold Level where they are given further training and support, particularly in the Expedition Section. Charlotte came into the Sixth Form having completed her Silver Award and was delighted to be able to continue. She added: ‘Thank you so much for all the help the staff team at Birkdale gave me in overcoming the challenges involved and in finishing the Award.’
