International Space Challenge Winners

Congratulations to the S4 team which won the prestigious International Space Challenge at RAF Waddington this week. The boys were faced with the task of designing a space hotel using science and engineering skills allied to marketing and language knowledge. Against stiff competition from all over England, the Birkdale boys came up with the innovative idea of a space hospital, taking advantage of low gravity to speed the recovery of spinal injury patients.

Having made a within-budget model of their meticulously researched and designed hospital, the boys then had to present their idea in French to RAF personnel before explaining the engineering concepts under interrogation from experts. The team won the competition for excellent ideas, execution and use of language - a shining example of how languages and other disciplines can be used in unison to great effect. They will now enjoy a day out at the National Space Academy.
