U15 Cricket team become Yorkshire Champions!

Congratulations to the U15 cricket team who defeated The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) in the rearranged Yorkshire T20 Cup Final at Hunslet Neslon CC on Wednesday.

On an overcast and damp day, Birkdale were asked to bat first in testing conditions. With this in mind, Birkdale took a sensible approach to their innings and looked to keep wickets in hand. Unfortunately, accurate bowling from GSAL and some questionable running between the wickets meant that after a solid start Birkdale soon fell to 26-3. Kaul and Koganti started the rebuilding process and took the score to 50 before Kaul went to another run out. Koganti, the main stay of the innings with 23, was then caught with the score on 80. Disappointingly, the lower order were unable to add many more to the total and Birkdale posted what seemed a very modest total of 88-9.

Despite the relatively small total, the boys were still confident on defending the score on what was becoming an ever-increasing inconsistent pitch. This proved to be the case; with Kaul and Salvi removing GSAL’s dangerous openers in the first two overs. With Birkdale firmly on the front foot, another two wickets saw GSAL 32-4 off 7 overs. With the game still in the balance, a fanstatic 8 over spell between Verma and Koganti had GSAL 52-8. With the game seemingly won, Birkdale let their foot slip off the gas and allowed a late surge from the GSAL lower order to take the game to the last over with only 7 runs required. The Birkdale boys were not to be denied however, and two wickets in two balls meant Birkdale became Yorkshire T20 Champions by 5 runs!

This was an excellent achievement from every member of the team as well as coach Mr Heaton.

Satyam Verma was named Man of the Match for 2-13 off his 4 overs.
