Birkdale Modern Foreign Languages was delighted to welcome a very special guest speaker for the European Day of Languages assembly. Paul Hughes is an award winning keynote speaker and mentor who has inspired many thousands of pupils nationwide on the benefits of multilingualism. This was followed by a fiercely contested European 5 a side football competition.
Paul, a linguist and former Special Forces operative, has been a spy and a forensic scientist and had the pupils rapt with tales of how the study of modern languages has been the bedrock of his remarkably diverse career. Paul extolled the virtues of language-learning and was invited in to reinforce the MFL department's focus of encouraging pupils to study languages to A level in conjunction with other subjects. The boys were extremely interested in Paul's presentation and many felt inspired having seen how languages can have a positive effect on the brain and give advantages in the competitive world of work.
The excitement continued when when S1/Y7 pupils played out the fiercely contested 5 a side football competition. Forget the Sheffield derby, real football action came to Birkdale! Representing the main European countries, the boys played some terrific football in a raucous atmosphere with, remarkably, England beating Germany 2 - 0 in the final. Some more of the same in Russia next summer would do nicely, please!
