Ten schools from around the region with nearly 100 delegates attended this event. The EYP represents a non-partisan and independent educational project which is tailored entirely to the needs of the young European citizen. It encourages independent thinking and socio-political initiative in young people.
Birkdale won the debate on their resolution by a commanding margin: 48 votes for the proposition that the EU should create green jobs with twenty seven votes against. Special mention must go to Emily Gaines who delivered the speech with clarity and enthusiasm, Peter Smith who researched and wrote most of the speech and Harrison Carter for his summation.
Unfortunately the Birkdale team came second over all again – but an even closer second than last year. Sheffield High School won they go on to represent the Yorkshire and Humberside region in the national finals.
Birkdale pupils were commended for their excellent speeches and quality of research. The pupils have learned a huge amount about debating. Overall the team worked together superbly with all members making valuable contributions. Marios Sofos must be commended for his contribution - in French - to the international debate at the end with Georgios Pilakoutas speaking in both Spanish and Portuguese.
The EYP were very grateful to Birkdale School for allowing them to host the forum.
