Both Birkdale Senior and Prep Schools were inspected during the Easter Term and received two separate reports. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is also approved to inspect the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The ISI is the body responsible for inspecting independent schools according to a standard framework which has been agreed with the DCFS and OFSTED.
The inspectors stated that at the Senior School “excellent levels of skill and knowledge are evident in the well supported extra-curricular programme”. The team also found that “pupils’ behaviour is exemplary and the relationships between pupils of all ages and between pupils and teachers are excellent,” and that “pupils’ attainment in public examinations is high by national standards”. Further, that “the personal development of pupils is outstanding, and is supported by the excellent pastoral care, and good arrangements for welfare, health and safety.”
They also identified that the pupils are confident, articulate and socially aware with good manners, civilised behaviour and respect for others as the norm.
At the Prep School pupils have “good teaching, with many excellent features, and the myriad of extra-curricular opportunities provided by the school are additional factors which enhance pupils’ learning.” “The planning of teaching is often exemplary”.
Inspectors also reported that the personal development of the pupils is excellent. Great importance is attached to their welfare, health and safety and that this supports their personal development well.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is effective in meeting its aim “to provide a
happy, welcoming and stimulating environment.” Further, “Children make at least good, and in some cases outstanding, progress. Behaviour is a strength. The staff promote good manners and helpfulness and as a result the boys are unfailingly polite, well mannered and considerate to others.”
