Art

At Birkdale we aim to promote the appreciation and understanding of the visual arts throughout the school and to impart the skills and techniques of as wide a range of art disciplines as is possible given the resources available within the department. It is our belief that art is a core subject along with English, Maths and Science etc. since to be able to draw and also to understand our own culture is an important life skill.

A unique feature of the department is that all the staff are practising artists. Their work is in many National and private collections, including The National Portrait Gallery, The Arts Council of Great Britain, The John Moores Collection, The Courtauld Institute, The Graves and Mappin Art Galleries, The RIBA, Sheffield University and Sheffield Cathedral.

All the equipment and materials used in the department are as professional as resources will allow and even the youngest pupils are given high quality materials and are taught to use them in a way that will never become redundant.
