Classics - Departmental Successes

The Classics department regularly sends pupils to study Classics at Oxford and Cambridge, and other top universities. Members of the 6th form Latin set have also gone on to achieve Oxbridge offers in subjects as diverse as Medicine, Maths, Law, and Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. A degree in archaeology has attracted several pupils who have studied Latin or Classical Civilisation with us.

In S3/Y9, boys have the opportunity to begin studying Ancient Greek in a weekly lunchtime club. They can choose to carry on with this to GCSE and, since 2005, to AS level as well.

Our students enter essay competitions organised nationally by the Hellenic Society and the Joint Association of Classsical Teachers. Recently a Birkdale pupil entered an essay on Atheian Democracy which won a prize. We encourage our S3/Y9 Latin groups to enter as an extension to their study of Roman Britain. One recently achieved a Commendation.
