Economics & Business Studies

Economics, Management and Business courses continue to be popular amongst Birkdale leavers and an A level in either Economics or Business Studies constitutes excellent preparation for such courses. Indeed, even if students are not expecting to read these subjects at university most will become managers of some sort in their own professional environment.

The main aim of the Department is to maximise the wide educational benefit to be gained from a knowledge and appreciation of Economics and Business Studies. A knowledge of Economics and/or Business Studies aids the understanding of the environment in which organisations operate, including the natural, social, political and economic environment.

A range of teaching methods is used and at some point in their course students will also have the opportunity to see ‘concepts in action’ via organised trips to successful local businesses. In addition, all members of the Lower Sixth gain valuable industrial experience through the Work Experience programme administered by the Department. The Department has run a thriving Young Enterprise programme for many years.
