English

The English Department seeks to encourage all pupils to develop a love of language and literature, and to build up skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing.
We have an excellent record of examination success in both GCSE English and English Literature, with virtually all students gaining C grade and above, and the majority gaining B grade and above.

At A Level, where group size is smaller, students are encouraged: to work independently, to take responsibility for participating in the exchange of ideas and opinions in class discussion; and to read widely and critically in their own time.

The department is fortunate in occupying a suite of spacious teaching rooms in the delightful surroundings of the Johnson building.

As a department we believe in the fundamental importance of dynamic teaching that is flexible, committed and pupil centred. We aim to comunicate our own love of the subject in the hope that as many as possible will come to appreciate the full potential of language in everyday life, and the power of literature to challenge and to inspire.
