With some initial help from Ben Hui, consultant for Sheffield City Council Invest Sheffield China Project, Head of Modern Languages, Mrs Kathryn Higham, has been exploring a proposed link with the Teensen International Education Centre established by the prestigious Nanchang No. 1 Middle School, to enable students to sit iGCSE and A level examinations rather than the national Chinese examinations. The ultimate purpose of this is to facilitate its students to make international applications for higher education, principally to the UK, Australia and the USA.
During the week’s visit, the Head of Modern Languages spent time at both of the schools’ campuses, observed lessons, spoken to senior staff and delivered a guest lecture. The presentation entitled, ‘Birkdale School – curriculum and opportunities’, was well-received by pupils and staff and was followed by a question and answer session.
The culmination of the visit was an agreement to establish a new partnership between the two schools for the mutual benefit of teachers and pupils. This will include advising teaching staff on the delivery of the curriculum as well as giving ideas to widen the range of extra-curricular activities as the International Education Centre continues to expand in size. In addition, it is hoped to set up opportunities for pupils in both schools to spend time in Sheffield/ Nanchang respectively.
