In the fantastic environs of Thornbridge Outdoor Centre in Derbyshire, a group of Birkdale staff revisited key emergency outdoor first-aid skills over two days, in preparation for supervising the impending L6 Gold DofE Practice expedition in Ullswater. Assessing a situation, ascertaining a casualty’s level of alertness, providing immediate help and support, and practising CPR (on dummies of course), were all crucial elements of the course – made more complicated by being focused on incidents and accidents in the wild. The course has to be undertaken every three years so that participants are able to refresh existing skills, as well as having the opportunity to be appraised of new developments, such as the increasing availability of AED, or Automated Emergency Defribilator devices. Both days were full and extremely involved, but those attending came away fully equipped to meet any challenges head-on.
