On a rather bleak and snowy Sunday morning, preparation for the summer 2019 practice expedition began in earnest, as forty L6 students and three Birkdale teachers boarded a coach and headed to Hayfield in the Sett Valley region of the Peak District. In their expedition groups, the students navigated their way up and around Kinder Scout moorland plateau and National Nature Reserve, which rises to 636 metres above sea-level at its highest point. The weather conditions made for a rejuvenating day, in stark contrast to last year’s enervating experience, and some lessons about preparation and pre-planning were undoubtedly learned. Ultimately, despite the challenging conditions, the day was a resounding success for all concerned. Next up: route planning and map work beginning this Thursday during form time in the Lecture Theatre.
