PP2 had a real treat this morning when Prof Dawson – school governor and ‘extreme cellist’ – visited us. He played a piece of fast music by JS Bach and ‘The Swan’ from Saint-Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’. Everyone was also delighted when he played them an excerpt from the Star Wars theme in response to their requests!

As well as talking to the pupils about his cello and the music he plays on it, he also showed us photos of some of the extreme locations he and his friends have played in; we were amazed to hear that, not only has he run the London Marathon with his 200 year old cello strapped to his back, playing it at both the start and the finish, but he has also carried it to the top of Ben Nevis and hauled it up the ‘Mother Cap’ rock formation near Surprise view in the Peak District!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed listening to him, and many have been inspired to think of exciting locations in which to practise playing their own instruments.
