Congratulations are due to Matthew (S3) who has managed a prestigious 3rd place in the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge. Matthew was one of around 20 Birkdale students who qualified for the competition by scoring in the top 10% of students nationally in the Bebras Challenge before Christmas. Matthew sailed through round one of this more challenging online test to earn his place in the finals. The final round has a much stronger emphasis on writing code to solve problems – but Matthew’s extensive experience of tackling code-breaking tasks helped him here and he scored an excellent 68 points to secure third place in the Intermediate age group.
Matthew has been very busy in recent months… With Alex Pilakoutas he helped Birkdale to a placing just outside the top ten teams in the Perse Coding Challenge before Easter and was also active in the Cyber Discovery pilot scheme and highest placed Birkdale student in the Alan Turing Cryptography Competition. He is currently working on a fiendishly complex code cracking program that should help to solve code-breaking competitions in record time in future.
Matthew will be invited to Oxford University at the end of June to collect his prize from the competition of a Raspberry Pi starter kit.
