S1 pupil Rowan was accompanied by Mr Depledge on a recent visit to Oxfordshire, following an invitation by Arden Motorsport to join their Young Racing Driver Academy.

On arrival, in the heart of the reception area it was interesting to see the history behind Arden Motorsport run by the famous Horner Family. There’s a large and impressive collection of trophies and championship winning formula 2 and 3 cars proudly displayed.

In the workshops engineers were working on formula 2, 3 and 4 race cars so you could see first hand the high specification parts such as bearings, gearboxes, engines and carbon fibre aerodynamic components.

During the visit Rowan was put through his paces in a Formula 4 racing car simulator which is very similar to those used by Formula 1 racing drivers. Mr Depledge also had the opportunity to go in the simulator but was described himself as “not a natural”. Following each of the test sessions the telemetry data was analysed to improve on track performance. It was interesting to see and understand the engineering and technology involved in running such operations.

During a working lunch in the boardroom the Performance Director discussed the training programme and nutritional expectations of the academy and set goals and agreed targets for the months ahead. We wish Rowan every success with his training.
