The Bebras Challenge is a computational thinking competition held annually in over 50 countries around the world each November. Students take part in an online quiz consisting of 6 easy, 6 medium and 6 hard questions. The tasks are fun, engaging and based on problems that Computer Scientists often encounter and enjoy solving. The tasks can be solved without prior knowledge, requiring instead a degree of logical thinking.
Birkdale entered around 200 students this year including all of the S1 and S2 pupils and all of the students with a Computer Science option subject. Prior experience of the questions certainly helps and many students are now old hands at tackling the robot programming questions and making turtle images and animations. This year S1 used some sample quizzes from previous years to prepare for the event and we are hoping for a good showing in the invitation-only next round which kicks off in March.
