The Birkdale Medical Society (MedSoc) have enjoyed three really excellent guest speakers over the last few weeks. MedSoc is aimed at those pupils aspiring to a career in medicine and provides invaluable advice and understanding of the many fields of work they may choose.
Firstly, Dr Sharma, a consultant from Sheffield Children’s Hospital came in just before half term to talk about Paediatric Gastroenterology and the career pathway in medicine. We learned about some of the fascinating endoscopic procedures they carry out.
Mr Metwally, a Consultant Gynaecologist from the Jessop’s Wing of Sheffield Teaching Hospital visited and explained the application process for medicine, what to consider when choosing where to apply (the importance of open days) and what it means to be a doctor as well as why a career in medicine is so rewarding.
Mr Walker gave a talk about his fascinating specialty of Cardiothoracic surgery. This included the use of echocardiograms in the diagnosis of valve disease and he brought in two model heart valves for the students to see, as used in valve replacement surgery.
We thank them all very much for their time.
