It has been lovely to see just how quickly the Prep School reverted back to remote learning this term. While it is certainly not what we wanted or planned for, the whole community’s hard work and adaptability have come to the fore.

In Pre-Prep the children have been accessing their work and communicating with their teachers using Seesaw and Google Meets. In Science and Art lessons the children’s studies have ranged from Space to penguins and aeroplanes to snow lanterns! The pupils have been inspired by reading different books; creating and illustrating some beautiful pieces of writing. Literacy lessons have even included handwriting practice in the snow! Each day the children practise reading and phonics and extend their grammatical knowledge for example the use of alliteration.

In Maths lessons the children have been working hard, learning new topics and developing their numeracy skills using a combination of games and challenges, covering topics such as doubling, 2-D and 3-D shapes, ordinal numbers, number bonds and much, much more. The children have enjoyed scavenger and number hunts, online games such as Hit the Button and Mental Maths Train to enhance their number skills and practise times tables.  As well as all of this the pupils have Drama, Music, PE, Spanish and RE lessons! Working this hard, it is no wonder the children are earning so many House Points!

The pupils in the Prep department have been working equally hard on Google Classroom. In English lessons they have been writing news articles, creating their own fantasy worlds in which to set their stories, studying poetry and imaging what life was like during the Second World War, including learning how to build an Anderson Shelter! Maths lessons have continued as normal, with pupils accessing the curriculum and gaining help from the teachers whenever needed. The National U11 Maths Quiz Final will now take place after Easter via Zoom giving our team plenty of time to hone their skills.

The children have been concentrating on healthy eating and fitness in Science and PE, drawing pictures of their sporting heroes in Art and creating desk tidies in DT.  Birkdale pupils are continuing to experience the whole curriculum and producing inspiring work across all areas while learning instruments and taking LAMDA lessons.

Birkdale Pupils of all ages are proving themselves capable of invention, resourcefulness and dedication to learning; essential life skills!
