Over the weekend of 20/21 March eight members of Birkdale’s Lower Sixth took part in the North East of England regional heat of the European Youth Parliament competition. As a result of Covid -19 the event took the format of an online forum but the debating was no less passionate because of that. Our students were very well informed and able to demonstrate their appreciation of the complex issues surrounding European politics.
Our team comprising of Harry, Alex, Tom, Max, Milan, Jonathan, Josh and Lewis was allocated to a range of different committees covering topics as broad as factory farming, equal access to Covid vaccinations, unemployment and the protection of minority languages across the EU. Working in committees all day on Saturday to prepare their resolutions, the students faced an intense day of debating throughout Sunday from 10.0 am until 5.0 pm. All students were extremely proactive and deserve great credit for their willingness to volunteer and keep the debates going. Their contributions were succinct and insightful with convincing rebuttals at appropriate points in the floor debates.
We are waiting to hear if any of our team have been selected to progress to the next stage of the competition but that takes nothing away from the excellent job that they did in flying the flag for European relations.
