On Wednesday last week we held our first Birkdale Lecture, a fascinating talk on mountain medicine by Dr Jeremy Windsor. This fundraising event was organised by our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Watchman, and the proceeds from the evening went to three charities – RNV Nepal, Community Action Nepal and Edale Mountain Rescue.

It was great to see so many Birkdale pupils, parents and staff attending. Dr Windsor is a consultant anaesthetist and he spoke passionately about his love of climbing mountains as well as the many medical conditions climbers can face including acute mountain sickness and high altitude pulmonary edema.

We are already looking forward to the second Birkdale lecture next term.
