GCSE Results 2017

Pupils at Birkdale School have, once again, achieved a series of exceptional GCSE results which recognise the years of hard work they have put into their studies.

2017 is the first year of a new grading system for English, English Literature and Mathematics which sees the subjects graded 9-1 – with 9 the highest and 1 the lowest mark. This system will be expanded to all subjects in the next few years.

All other subjects will be graded under the old lettered system – by way of comparison, the new numbered grade boundaries approximately equate to 7-9 being the A and A* range, 4-6 being C to B and 1-3 being G to D.

The new 9 grade is extremely difficult to achieve, much harder than an A* grade – ahead of the results, it was the predicted only 3% of students would achieve the grade 9.

The key headlines at Birkdale are:
•15% of English, English Literature and Mathematics results were at grade 9
•33% of English, English Literature and Mathematics results were at grades 8 or 9
•Over half of all results (55%) across all subjects were graded at A*-A or 9-7
•81% of all results were at grade B or higher or 6 or higher.

As well as the headlines, there are always significant individual performances to highlight. Among these are Birkdale pupils Rishin Madan, Barclay Brown and Mayuran Visakan who all achieved a clean sweep of the very highest grades – three 9s together with seven A*s.

Head Master Dr Paul Owen said:

“I am thrilled that Birkdale pupils have once again received such excellent GCSE results. My congratulations go to all of the pupils and staff who have worked extremely hard. I am delighted for the many pupils who have achieved grades of 9, 8 and 7 or A* and A but equally pleased for the pupils who have achieved their personal best and fulfilled their own potential. We look forward to welcoming the vast majority back to our Sixth Form where they will continue their studies.”
