Clubs

Birkdale is keen to extend the education we offer beyond the classroom and there are numerous lunch time clubs and after school activities for pupils to participate in.

Detailed below are some of the outstanding extra-curricular clubs available. In addition, the IT room is open every lunchtime except Friday.

Mandarin Classes

Birkdale is one of a select number of Schools to be recognised by the Confucius Institute for its work in promoting the study of Mandarin Chinese and in July 2013 was awarded the coveted accolade of becoming a Confucius Classroom.

The Confucius Institute also helps Birkdale provide activities within the curriculum to ensure that students become familiar with Chinese culture, art, music and history. Year 7 (S1) enjoy an annual Chinese day and Mandarin lessons are currently available to Years 10 and above (S4-U6) at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Some members of staff have also been able to attend Mandarin classes and we will be offering beginner and intermediate evening classes to all interested Senior School parents.

Birkdale has also enjoyed considerable success in recent years in the painting competition organised by the Confucius Institute as part of its Chinese New Year celebrations and we hope that this will continue for many years to come.

For anyone interested in participating in Mandarin classes please email ELLebon@www.birkdaleschool.org.uk

Christian Union

Christian Union activities extend throughout the Senior School at Birkdale.

‘Quest’ is for Year 7 and Year 8 boys (S1 and S2), whilst ‘Discovery’ caters for Years 9 and 10 (S3 and S4). These groups are led by teaching staff, and meet on Friday lunchtimes on the ground floor of the Johnson building. A typical meeting might involve games and bible study or a guest speaker.

The Senior CU is pupil led, and is open to Year 11 and above (S5).

We have an increasingly strong link to Glod, a youth ministry which is focused particularly on independent schools. They run camps and residentials during school holidays with an evangelistic emphasis. Click here to go to the Glod website.

Senior School Debating Society

The Senior School Debating Society meets regularly to discuss powerful issues relating to current affairs, ethics and the like. Many members go on to to get involved with the European Youth Parliament.
