Old Birkdalians Football Victory

The Old Birkdalians Football Match took place at Castle Dyke on Saturday. It was great to see some of the 6th formers who left Birkdale over the last couple of years. The Old Birkdalians put a strong team together and it was a very competitive game played in good spirit with a friendly atmosphere. The Old Boys eventually won 6-4 in an entertaining match. The Old Boys had to resist a current 1st XI comeback in the second half and cameo appearances from Mr Julian and Mr Morton.

'Better a witty fool than a foolish wit'

The fifty-three S2 boys who travelled to Manchester to see Shakespeare's Twelfth Night were by turns enthralled and appalled – the ribald Sir Andrew Aguecheek uttering some subtly saucy lines. With Mina Anwar as a brilliant Maria, and Kate Kennedy striding the boards as a statuesque Countess Olivia, the boys were able to witness a scintillating and effervescent display of theatrical flair, and returned to school tired but replete.

Obituary for Donald Holt

We were sad to hear the news that former Birkdale teacher, Donald Holt had died peacefully on 27 March 2017. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Donald was very dedicated to his teaching. Through it, he was able to help so many people be successful. When Birkdale decided to set up a Sixth Form, Donald was one of a core of staff of the old 'Senior School' in the Oakholme Building who got things up to enough speed to make this possible. He was instrumental in establishing the Physics Department and was appointed Head of Science.

We were also lucky to be joined by a current serving officer, who spoke to the boys about the huge range of careers available in the RAF and answered their many questions. An exciting and informative morning for all involved!
