The seventy S2 boys and five staff who travelled to Stratford to see Twelfth Night were by turns enthralled and taken aback – the superb Michael Cochrane’s interpretation of the hopeless Sir Andrew Aguecheek was a highlight, whilst Orsino’s rather risqué court raised a few eyebrows.

Bruce McCandless Space Lecture

Last Saturday, 6 A-level physicists were given an amazing opportunity to attend a lecture by former NASA Astronaut Bruce McCandless. The afternoon event was held in the West Yorkshire town of Pontefract and run by the Space Society. Upon entry we were presented with an array of various NASA merchandise, much of which was signed by astronauts including Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong!

Politics Forum Debate

This week the Politics Forum held its first session of the academic year. The format for this session was a debate on 'whether the UK should introduce and employ a system of ethnic profiling.' This was a controversial issue to debate, clear from the  the vast number of questions asked by members of the audience. Nepa18 Fundraising

With wonderful and enthusiastic support from Nepa17 and Nepa18 members, a cake sale was run over two breaks last week. On the second morning cakes were sold in true Nepalese style where haggling was the order of the day. The Pupils seemed to enjoy this change to the normal way of buying. Thanks go to all those who baked and bought! Everyone seemed to also enjoy the eating as well. A total of £222 was raised which will be put to good use in Nepal.

Yorkshire Swimming Champ!

Tom Wilkinson (S1) competed in the Yorkshire Swimming Championships recently. He was crowned Yorkshire Champion when he won gold in 100 m breaststroke and 200 m individual medley. He also won silver in 100 m backstroke.Tom's 100 breaststroke time ranks him 2nd in the U.K. This is an outstanding achievement, congratulations from everyone at Birkdale!

National Poetry Day the Classics Way

Birkdale Classics Department celebrated National Poetry Day 2017 with a lunchtime event on the theme of 'Freedom'. Pupils from all age groups gathered to listen to poems performed in Ancient Greek, Latin and English by students in S3-U6. They also enjoyed authentic Roman and Greek refreshments.

Birkdale Modern Foreign Languages was delighted to welcome a very special guest speaker for the European Day of Languages assembly. Paul Hughes is an award winning keynote speaker and mentor who has inspired many thousands of pupils nationwide on the benefits of multilingualism. This was followed by a fiercely contested European 5 a side football competition.

London Research Trip 2017 Presentation Evening

The six winners of Birkdale’s London Research Trip competition presented their findings and conclusions at the end of last week. This was the culmination of a research process which began in London back in June when the students spent two days studying in the capital’s libraries and archives, an opportunity they’d won by submitting the best of this year’s research proposals.

Birkdale Jazz Band Performs at Whirlow Hall Farm Fayre

Visitors to the Whirlow Hall Farm Fayre on Sunday 10 September were entertained by the Birkdale jazz band Octopus playing a variety of traditional and more modern pieces. The band has become an established feature at this annual event, held to raise funds which enable inner-city children to spend time in the countryside and develop their understanding of farming. The students made the most of this opportunity to perform to a large audience in a spacious arena.
