Drama plays an important part of school life throughout the Prep School. It is taught as part of the curriculum until the end of Prep 2. Boys develop their acting skills through improvisation, script writing and stage technique. There are also many opportunities to perform live on stage.
Every year the Pre-Prep staff organise a Nativity Play and a Summer Play which are performed by all of the Pre-Prep boys to their parents and to the Prep School.
In Prep 3 and Prep 4 boys have the opportunity to join Drama Club. During the Christmas Term, Drama Club boys perform on the professional stage as part of the National Shakespeare Schools Festival. Recently we have performed The Tempest (2013) and Richard III (2014) at the Montgomery Theatre in Sheffield.
During the Easter Term, Drama Club rehearses and performs a school play which is presented on the Senior School stage on three nights. Boys have the opportunity to help back stage and assist with lighting and sound as well as taking part in the show.
The Summer Term provides an opportunity to be involved in the Comedy Night along with staff and students from the Senior School to raise money for school charities.
We also put on occasional joint productions with Ashdell School which involve a huge cast of boys and girls in a musical show. Ashdell School hosted 'Oliver' in 2010 and in 2012 Birkdale School hosted 'Macbeth'.
Our aim is to develop self-confidence, communication skills and teamwork and above all to have fun!
